Afghanistan REACH

Location: Afghanistan
Funder: Management Sciences for Health
Duration: This project is no longer active.

The REACH program works with the Afghanistan Ministry of Health to deliver essential health services to rural women and their children under five. REACH addresses the lack of midwifery skills among health professionals through a comprehensive behavior change communication campaign; builds capacity of local nongovernmental organizations through grants that support the delivery of the basic package of health services; and strengthens the Ministry of Health to fulfill its role as guardian of the health sector.

AED recently organized a workshop on interpersonal communication skills for community health workers in Afghanistan, under the USAID-funded REACH Program (Rural Expansion of Afghanistan's Community-Based Health Care).

AED is a subcontractor to Management Sciences for Health on this program, which is USAID's largest health initiative in Afghanistan. The training workshop, led by Dr. Karuna Onta, a senior staff member from AED's Linkages Project office in India, taught participants how to communicate effectively with their clients and how to test and use educational materials.

Representatives from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Women's Affairs, Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, and 18 NGOs attended the August training. One of REACH's biggest challenges is promoting gender equity in Afghanistan's health programs, including the recruitment and training of female community health workers.

Training in interpersonal communication and counseling is helping empower both women providers and their clients, giving them a voice in decisions affecting the health and well-being of themselves and their families.
